ActionAid Urges Impeachment for Governors Misusing State Funds for 2027 Campaigns

ActionAid Nigeria has demanded that any governor caught using state resources to finance political campaigns should face immediate impeachment.

This call comes as concerns grow regarding the potential misappropriation of public funds ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, released a statement describing the alleged diversion of state funds as unacceptable.

He highlighted that such actions are particularly offensive given the severe economic challenges currently facing Nigerians, including high debt levels, failing infrastructure, and widespread hunger.

Core demands from the organisation include:

  • A transparent public explanation from all governors and political actors linked to the funding allegations.
  • Immediate, comprehensive investigations by anti-corruption bodies, specifically the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
  • The initiation of impeachment proceedings by State Houses of Assembly for any official proven to have misused public assets for partisan gain.

Mamedu emphasized that taxpayers’ money, security votes, and government infrastructure are not meant to serve as personal war chests for political ambitions.

He noted that in robust democracies globally, the abuse of public office for electoral advantage typically leads to serious legal consequences or forced resignations.

The organisation has also called upon citizens and whistleblowers to remain watchful as the 2027 election cycle approaches.

ActionAid stressed that defending democratic integrity is a shared responsibility and that public resources must be shielded from political exploitation.
