INEC Pledges Inclusive Voting for Osun State Gubernatorial Election

Ahead of the August 15, 2026, Osun governorship election, INEC has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring inclusive and accessible voting for Persons With Disabilities by providing specialized assistive devices.

With the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed the rights of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) to participate fully in the electoral process, citing Section 54 of the Electoral Act. Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, confirmed this commitment during an advocacy meeting in Osogbo focused on the deployment of assistive technologies.

Babalola emphasized that INEC is actively working to dismantle barriers to entry, ensuring that every voter can cast their ballot with independence and dignity. The commission has introduced a formal framework for disability participation and established a specialized department to oversee inclusive programs. Furthermore, INEC is pressuring political parties to incorporate dedicated offices for PWDs within their internal structures.

During the briefing, officials highlighted the use of Braille ballot guides, magnifying lenses, and visual aids for deaf voters as critical tools to protect ballot secrecy and individual autonomy. Participants were encouraged to disseminate information regarding these tools to ensure widespread readiness before the election date.

Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, representing the National Orientation Agency, praised the initiative, noting that democratic integrity depends on full inclusion. Similarly, Steven Idowu, head of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Osun, called for broader societal support to ensure that all citizens can contribute to the democratic process without hindrance.
