Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s intention to raise electricity tariffs. He stated that citizens should not be forced to pay for historical inefficiency and policy shortcomings within the power industry.
Speaking to the press in Ilawe-Ekiti, Falana emphasized that the government must secure stable power supply before considering any price adjustments. He noted that President Bola Tinubu explicitly promised uninterrupted electricity during his campaign, a commitment that must be prioritized over increasing financial demands on consumers.
Falana condemned the government’s apparent desire to abandon its oversight duties following the privatization of distribution firms. He raised concerns that close personal ties between government officials and company owners may be preventing proper accountability. Consequently, he suggested that the state should consider repossessing these entities if the private sector continues to struggle with service delivery.
He concluded that rather than offloading the cost of failed policies onto the public, the administration should focus on structural reforms to improve generation, transmission, and distribution efficiency.
