NHRC Demands Answers from Nigerian Air Force Following Civilian Casualties in Airstrikes
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has officially requested that the Nigerian Air Force provide an explanation for the ongoing airstrikes that have resulted in civilian fatalities across the nation.
The commission stated that the recurrence of these events highlights significant issues regarding human rights and institutional accountability.
Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, expressed deep concern over the loss of innocent lives during military efforts against insurgency and banditry.
While acknowledging the government’s obligation to restore security, Ojukwu emphasized that these operations must adhere to legal boundaries and international humanitarian protocols designed to safeguard civilians.
The commission noted that injuries and deaths among women and children suggest potential violations of the fundamental right to life and human dignity.
Ojukwu questioned why these tragedies persist despite prior commitments to improve operational protocols and prevent harm to non-combatants.
Highlighting specific incidents between April and May at markets in Yobe, Niger, and Zamfara states, the commission identified a disturbing pattern.
The NHRC reminded the military that warfare principles—specifically distinction, proportionality, and necessity—must be strictly followed. The agency insisted that civilian populations cannot be viewed as mere collateral damage in security missions.
Furthermore, the NHRC has called for a full explanation of these events, the implementation of preventative measures, and the initiation of transparent, independent investigations to ensure that affected families receive appropriate justice and support.
