FIFA Proposes Red Cards for Players Covering Mouths During On-Pitch Clashes

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called for the immediate expulsion of players who cover their mouths while engaging in confrontations on the field.

This proposal follows a high-profile incident where Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racial abuse during a Champions League playoff; Prestianni reportedly obscured his mouth while making the alleged remarks.

Infantino argued that if a player hides their speech during a dispute that leads to racial fallout, they should be sent off, suggesting that the act of covering one’s mouth implies the communication of inappropriate content.

While UEFA continues to investigate the Prestianni case—which could result in a 10-match ban for the player—FIFA is moving to formalize preventative measures through the International Football Association Board (IFAB) ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

English FA CEO and IFAB member Mark Bullingham supported the move, stating there are few legitimate reasons to hide one’s speech during an on-pitch argument.

Beyond punitive measures, Infantino also suggested a cultural shift that would allow for lighter sanctions if a player takes public responsibility and apologizes for outbursts made in anger. The proposed regulations could be ratified as early as next month’s FIFA Congress in Vancouver.
