US Approves $413 Million for West African Security Ops
The United States has authorized $413 million in funding for counter-insurgency and security operations across Nigeria and West Africa for the 2026 fiscal year. This allocation follows the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by President Donald Trump in December 2025.
The funding is channeled through the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and is part of a massive $901 billion national defense package.
While the Act does not provide a country-specific breakdown, the $413 million matches the full amount requested by AFRICOM for its operations and maintenance budget on the continent.
The increased engagement follows US air strikes on suspected terrorist hideouts in Sokoto State on Christmas Day 2025, carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities. The actions point to deeper US involvement in the region, including intelligence sharing and operational support against extremist groups.
The 2026 NDAA introduces structural changes to how Washington manages its Africa policy. It establishes a new Assistant Secretary for African Affairs and a dedicated Bureau of African Affairs within the State Department to streamline assistance and diplomacy.
Furthermore, the law mandates a comprehensive assessment of Russia’s military posture and influence in Africa. This review will examine Russian logistics, basing, and power projection, reflecting Washington’s concerns over growing geopolitical rivalry on the continent.
