United Nigeria Airlines Grounds Aircraft After Fifth Bird Strike of 2026
United Nigeria Airlines experienced another operational setback when one of its planes was grounded following a bird strike. This incident marks the airline’s fifth such occurrence in 2026.
The airline confirmed that a CRJ-900 aircraft was struck by a bird during its landing in Abuja. This happened on Flight UN0579, which originated from Kano’s Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and was en route to Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Chibuike Uloka, the airline’s spokesperson, provided this information to on Wednesday. Immediately after the event, the aircraft was removed from service, adhering to established safety protocols.
A statement from the airline clarified its actions:
“In line with our strict and uncompromising safety standards, the aircraft has been immediately withdrawn from operations to undergo comprehensive technical inspections and any required maintenance before being returned to service.”
This development is expected to disrupt flight schedules across United Nigeria Airlines’ network. The airline appealed for passengers’ patience and apologized for any inconvenience, stressing that passenger safety remains its highest priority.
“Consequently, some flights across our network may not operate as scheduled; however, safety remains our highest priority. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this unforeseen development may cause to our passengers’ travel plans.”
While acknowledging this as the fifth bird strike for its fleet this year, United Nigeria Airlines affirmed that each incident has been managed in full compliance with applicable aviation safety regulations and established operational procedures.
The airline also reaffirmed its dedication to safe and dependable services, saying, “We appreciate the understanding of our valued passengers and reaffirm our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational reliability.” They further promised continued efforts to optimize operations and exceed passenger expectations.
