AI Use in Studies Soars Among Nigerian Learners, Says Google
Nigerian students are turning to artificial intelligence more than ever to aid their studies, according to new Google Search trend data released Tuesday as schools reopened nationwide.
Google reported that searches linking “AI” and “studying” surged by over 200 per cent compared to 2024, showing that learners are moving beyond curiosity and actively using AI tools as study partners. Students increasingly sought AI tutors, free tools, and subject-specific prompts to support their work.
The data revealed a 50 per cent rise in “AI + chemistry” searches, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” each rose by 30 per cent. Queries tied to grammar climbed 20 per cent. Popular questions included “What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?” and “how to use AI to solve math problems.”
Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, said the trend underscored how students are using AI not just for quick answers but to deepen understanding of challenging topics. He added that Google remained committed to creating tools that would help learners grow and succeed.
Beyond academics, general interest in AI is also rising. Searches like “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” jumped 80 per cent, while “who is the father of AI” grew 70 per cent. Searches for “AI detection” spiked by 290 per cent, reflecting growing concerns about responsible use and academic integrity.
Google also noted a sharp increase in career-driven searches. “Generative AI” emerged as a breakout term, often paired with “professional certification,” suggesting young Nigerians are equipping themselves for the future job market.
Overall, AI-related searches in Nigeria hit an all-time high in 2025, up 60 per cent year-on-year.
