South African Man Charged with Murder and Rape in Shocking Gender-Based Violence Case

Vhembe District, Limpopo, A 33-year-old man stands accused of murdering his girlfriend and sexually assaulting her 16-year-old daughter in a horrific case that has shaken the local community. The suspect appeared in Tshitale Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 14, 2025, facing charges for both crimes.

According to police reports, the incident began on Saturday, August 9, when the 36-year-old victim was last seen alive. The following day, the suspect allegedly woke the teenage girl in the early hours, claiming they needed to search for her mother at local taverns in Mundzedzi village.

When the search proved futile, the accused led the minor to a secluded area near Vleifontein cemetery, where he allegedly raped her before instructing her to return home. The traumatized teenager immediately reported the assault to a community member, who alerted authorities.

During interrogation on Monday, August 11, investigators uncovered even more chilling details. The suspect allegedly admitted to killing the woman and disposing of her body in a pit toilet at a nearby school. With the help of forensic teams, the victim’s remains were recovered, leading to an additional murder charge.

The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) confirmed the suspect abandoned his bail application.

The case has been postponed to September 11, 2025, for further investigation.

The accused remains in custody, with his identity withheld to protect the minor victim.

Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo’s police commissioner, condemned the crime, particularly as it occurred during Women’s Month, a period dedicated to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.

“This case epitomizes the worst of GBV, a man who should have been a protector became a predator. The brutality of murdering a woman and assaulting her child is unconscionable,” Hadebe stated.
