U.S. Yet to Lift Visa Restrictions on Nigerians Despite Ongoing Talks – Foreign Ministry
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that visa restrictions recently imposed by the United States on some Nigerian citizens remain in effect, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government.
Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said on Wednesday that discussions were continuing, but there had been no reversal of the policy so far.
The visa limitations persist as the U.S. has not issued a formal response to Nigeria’s request for a policy review. Under the revised U.S. visa reciprocity schedule, the validity period for several non-immigrant visa categories — including B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) — has been reduced to three months, with only single-entry allowed.
In a statement last month, the Federal Government expressed concern over what it termed a disproportionate reaction by the U.S., arguing the move contradicted the principles of fairness and reciprocity expected between allied nations.
Officials warned that the restrictions could negatively impact legitimate travelers such as students, professionals, and families, and called for a reconsideration of the measure in light of the longstanding bilateral ties between the two nations.
While acknowledging the United States’ sovereign authority to determine its immigration rules, the Federal Government maintained that the decision risks undermining the cultural and educational exchanges that have long been central to U.S.-Nigeria relations.
