Onyeka Onwenu’s Son Remembers Mom On First Death Anniversary
Tijani Onwenu, son of the late music icon Onyeka Onwenu, has commemorated the first anniversary of her passing with a brief but emotional tribute. Sharing a message on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, he wrote, “A year ago, today. RIP mom July 30, 2024.”
Known as the “Elegant Stallion,” Onyeka Onwenu tragically died after collapsing shortly after a performance at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was later confirmed dead.

At the time, her family issued a statement expressing their deep loss and appreciation for the public’s support, describing her as not just a music legend but a cherished mother and national treasure.
Onyeka Onwenu is fondly remembered for her classic albums like In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun, as well as her standout performances in acclaimed films such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart.
