Nigeria Bows Out Of FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have bowed out of the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup following a 77–51 loss to Hungary on Wednesday night, July 16, in Czechia.
The Nigerian team held their own early on, ending the first quarter tied 9–9. However, Hungary took control in the second quarter with a commanding 30–12 run, establishing a lead they would not relinquish.
Despite putting up a stronger effort in the third quarter scoring 15 points to Hungary’s 16, Nigeria couldn’t narrow the deficit. Hungary stayed ahead in the final quarter, outscoring the D’Tigress 16–15 to close out the game.
Kinga Jisepovits led the Hungarian side with 19 points, while Eliza Farbas pulled down 13 rebounds. Nigeria’s top contributors were Tobenna Nweke with 12 points and Francis Chukwu with 9 rebounds.
Although the loss marks the end of their campaign, the Junior D’Tigress made history as the first African side to win a game and reach the round of 16 at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.
