Tragedy In Minna As Nine-Year-Old Girl Drowns In Flooded Drainage
A devastating tragedy struck the Tunga area of Minna, Niger State, as a nine-year-old girl, Omonegbo Umoru, drowned in a flooded drainage following a heavy downpour last Tuesday. Her grief-stricken mother, Elizabeth Umoru, has recounted the heart-wrenching ordeal that claimed the life of her only daughter.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when Omonegbo was sent on a simple errand to buy rice for the family’s lunch. She was accompanied by her 11-year-old brother, who watched helplessly as floodwaters swept his sister away.
“She had just collected the rice and was returning when she slipped and fell into a drainage,” Elizabeth told PUNCH in a tearful interview. “The rain had flooded the drains and the water was too strong for her brother and neighbours to rescue her.”
According to family members, the siblings had left the house with an umbrella as it had been raining lightly throughout the morning. But shortly after they set out, the weather turned, and heavy rainfall returned, overwhelming the drainage systems in the area and causing sudden flooding.
Witnesses said Omonegbo lost her balance and fell into a concealed drainage channel as the water rapidly rose. Her brother tried to save her and alerted passersby, but the force of the water proved too powerful.
“Her slippers and the nylon bag she was carrying fell off,” Elizabeth recalled. “Her brother picked them up, but the current carried her away. People tried, but the water had risen too high.”
Omonegbo’s body was later recovered in a distant part of Minna with visible injuries to her head.
Since the incident, the family has been in mourning. Elizabeth, surrounded by sympathisers at her home, said her daughter was deeply loved, describing her as “a second wife” to her husband because of their closeness.
“She left so happily when I sent her to get rice. The next thing I heard was someone telling me rain had carried my daughter. I thought they were joking.”
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) said it was unaware of the incident but promised to investigate.
“The agency will visit the home of the girl to meet with the parents and gather more details,” said Hussaine Ibrahim, spokesman of NSEMA.
The tragic event has once again raised concerns over the poor state of urban drainage in Nigerian cities and the dangers posed to residents, especially children, during the rainy season.
As the community mourns the loss of Omonegbo, calls have grown louder for authorities to implement urgent infrastructural improvements and early warning systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
