Two Brothers Sentenced To Two Years In Jail For Drug Trafficking In Lagos
The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Abugu John Onwuima and Abugu Kenneth, two brothers, to two years imprisonment each for unlawful exportation of narcotic drugs.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Ambrose Alagoa on Monday, May 12, 2025, after both men pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of drug trafficking brought against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The court also gave the convicts the option of paying a fine of N3 million each, totaling N6 million. The men were arrested on April 4, 2025, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, during the outward clearance of passengers for a Qatar Airways flight bound for India.
The NDLEA alleged that they attempted to export 2.5 kilograms of cocaine each without lawful authority.
Both men pleaded guilty during their arraignment, and NDLEA prosecutor Abu Ibrahim presented the case. The defense counsel, Benson Ndakara, confirmed the brothers’ acceptance of responsibility.
Justice Alagoa sentenced them in line with the provisions of the NDLEA Act, while emphasizing that the judgment served as a warning to others involved in drug trafficking.
The convicts now have the option of serving their jail terms or paying the imposed fine.
