2026 World Cup: Lamine Yamal Outpaces Messi as New Youngest Tournament Scorer

Spain’s Lamine Yamal made history at the 2026 World Cup by becoming one of the youngest goalscorers ever, moving ahead of Lionel Messi in the tournament rankings.

During Spain’s second Group H match against Saudi Arabia, winger Lamine Yamal established a historic record. By scoring a goal off an assist from Mikel Oyarzabal, Yamal officially surpassed Lionel Messi on the list of youngest goalscorers in World Cup history. The contest concluded in a decisive 4-0 victory for Spain, highlighted by Oyarzabal scoring two goals.

This achievement places Yamal in rare company. He is just the second teenager to net the first goal in a World Cup game, following the feat accomplished by a 17-year-old Pele in 1958. At 18 years and 323 days, Yamal now sits eighth on the all-time youngest scorers list. Consequently, Lionel Messi, who was 18 years and 357 days old when he scored his debut World Cup goal, has shifted to ninth place.
