Alexander Zverev believes a significant performance at Wimbledon is well within his reach this year. The German second seed secured a spot in the third round after a commanding 6-1 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory against Valentin Royer. This win also marked his 50th career success on grass surfaces.
Coming off his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, Zverev feels buoyed by his current form. Although he has historically struggled at the All England Club—having never progressed past the fourth round—the 27-year-old remains optimistic. He noted that winning in straight sets helps build the necessary confidence for the tournament.
Zverev dominated the early stages of his match against the 75th-ranked Royer, winning nine consecutive games. Despite a minor lapse in the third set that allowed his opponent to force a tie-break, the German regained composure to finish the match in just over two hours. He is now set to face American player Marcos Giron in the next round.
Reflecting on his recent success, Zverev acknowledged that his mindset has shifted since winning his first major. However, he remains grounded, emphasizing the importance of a short-term memory in tennis. He stressed that while his recent achievement is a relief, he is fully focused on the current challenge at Wimbledon. Elsewhere in the tournament, Taylor Fritz defeated Patrick Kypson, and fifth seed Alex de Minaur moved past Adrian Mannarino with ease.
