Wrexham are nearing an agreement to sign goalkeeper Anthony Patterson from Sunderland. Manager Phil Parkinson aims to bolster his goalkeeping options by acquiring the 26-year-old from his previous side.
Patterson is scheduled for a medical examination with Wrexham and could potentially debut during their Championship opening match against Cardiff City on 17 August. This move may facilitate the departure of Nigeria international Arthur Okonkwo, who is in the final year of his deal at the Racecourse Ground, as is Wales international Danny Ward.
A product of the Sunderland academy, Patterson debuted for the Black Cats in a 2020-21 EFL Trophy fixture. After a loan spell at Notts County, he played a key role in Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship. Last season, he spent time on loan at Millwall, playing 16 matches. In total, he has accumulated 169 competitive appearances for Sunderland.
While Wrexham have already recruited Danny Imray and Ben Whiteman this summer, Parkinson emphasized the need for further squad improvements. Ahead of a recent Carabao Cup match, he noted that the team is actively searching for additional talent to remain competitive in the upcoming season.
