Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson anticipates growth as team faces elite opponents

Phil Parkinson looks to refine his Wrexham squad through elite pre-season fixtures as the team aims for a stronger Championship performance in 2026-27.

Phil Parkinson has marked his fifth anniversary managing Wrexham while preparing his squad for a series of high-profile friendly matches against Premier League sides. Following a season where the team finished seventh and narrowly missed the play-offs, the manager believes his group will be better equipped for the 2026-27 Championship campaign.

This pre-season includes a match against Manchester United in Finland, followed by fixtures in the United States against Leeds United, Liverpool, and Sunderland. Parkinson noted that these challenging games have become standard for the club since its high-profile ownership change in 2021.

Reflecting on the previous year, Parkinson attributed a difficult start—yielding only 10 points from their first 10 matches—to a significant roster overhaul. With a more settled squad this time around, including players like Lewis O’Brien and Ben Sheaf who are now fully integrated, he expects consistent improvement. While the club still plans to add new players, the scale of recruitment will be notably smaller than the 13 signings made last summer. The ultimate goal remains maintaining the high-energy, aggressive style of play that the Wrexham faithful expect.
