Former England international Wayne Rooney believes the referee made an error by failing to award a penalty to Ghana during Tuesday’s World Cup fixture. The two nations played to a 0-0 draw, keeping their unbeaten statuses intact throughout the competition.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Rooney remarked that England was lucky to escape the situation without a foul called. He pointed to a 79th-minute sequence where Ghana’s Abdul Fatawu sent a pass to Prince Adu. As Adu entered the box, England defender Ezri Konsa executed a sliding challenge from behind that tripped the striker. Although the contact appeared to be on the player rather than the ball, the official allowed play to continue, and the VAR team did not suggest a review.
Rooney noted that Konsa took a significant risk with the tackle, emphasizing that the defender’s feet left the ground and he made clear contact with the opponent. This missed call served as a primary talking point in a match characterized by limited scoring chances and England conceding most of the possession.
