Wayne Rooney, the former captain of England, has expressed his preference for starting Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo over Elliot Anderson in the upcoming World Cup last-32 clash against DR Congo. Despite Mainoo not seeing any action during the group stages, Rooney highlighted the 21-year-old’s unique capability to navigate crowded spaces and deliver precise passes.
Mainoo’s career has seen a recent resurgence under the guidance of Michael Carrick, following a period where he fell out of favor under former manager Ruben Amorim. In contrast, Elliot Anderson, currently linked with a record-breaking £116m transfer to Manchester City, played in every group match for England.
Former striker Emile Heskey also questioned the team selection, noting his surprise that 36-year-old Jordan Henderson was favored over younger prospects like Mainoo during the recent win against Panama. Heskey expressed concern that failing to provide tournament experience to a player of Mainoo’s potential could be a missed opportunity for future development.
Regarding the team’s tactical approach, Rooney suggested that Jude Bellingham could operate in a deeper role against teams utilizing a low block, while maintaining that Declan Rice should continue in his defensive midfield position.
