KwaZulu-Natal has become the primary location for these ongoing demonstrations, which have previously caused four deaths and triggered mass repatriations by various African nations. Law enforcement officials confirmed that at least 80 individuals were taken into custody following the unrest. These events occur amid a broader environment of intimidation that has prompted over 176,000 people to leave South Africa.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently addressed the Pan-African Parliament, urging collaborative regional management of migration as his administration navigates domestic unrest. Despite official statements opposing vigilantism and illegal intimidation tactics, organizations like Amnesty International have criticized the government for failing to take definitive action against those responsible for the attacks.
