Vice President Shettima Urges States to Prioritize Economic Independence for National Development

Vice President Kashim Shettima challenges Nigerian states to leverage their unique assets to boost economic growth, emphasizing that national success depends on local prosperity.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerian state governors to utilize their specific regional resources to foster nationwide progress. During his address at the Jigawa State Economic and Investment Summit in Dutse, he noted that the health of the federation relies on the fiscal vitality of its individual states, not just the central government.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Shettima defended recent federal economic reforms as vital steps toward long-term stability. He specifically pointed to the Business Facilitation Act and the shift in foreign exchange policy as tools to increase transparency and attract capital. Furthermore, he highlighted the 2023 Electricity Act, which grants states the authority to manage their own power generation and distribution.

Shettima praised Jigawa State for contributing nearly 40 per cent of the nation’s wheat supply, though he cautioned that agricultural yields must improve to compete with regional peers. Governor Umar Namadi stated that the summit aims to convert the state’s resources into clear investment results. He noted that Jigawa has successfully attracted 64 investments in three years and emphasized his administration’s focus on improving the local business climate in sectors like energy and agriculture.
