The United States government has denounced the recent massacre of family members belonging to Plateau State clergyman, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, labeling the event as a horrific act. Washington is calling on Nigerian officials to pursue and prosecute the culprits behind this violence.
Through a statement posted on social media this Thursday, the US Bureau of African Affairs offered sympathies to the grieving family while advocating for enhanced protections for endangered groups in the Middle Belt region. The bureau noted that recent discussions with Nigerian representatives emphasized the necessity of stopping these repetitive assaults and ensuring that justice is served for victims.
The incident occurred on July 12 in the Kum area of Riyom, where nine of Rev. Dachomo’s relatives—including a newborn—were slaughtered. The cleric, who leads the Church of Christ in Nations in Barkin Ladi, believes armed Fulani militias carried out the strike. He stated that the attackers specifically requested his name before initiating gunfire. He suspects he is being targeted due to his vocal stance against regional violence, noting that past attacks already claimed the lives of his grandmother and uncle. He has since received formal death threats.
The US government reiterated its pledge to assist Nigeria in addressing extremism, asserting that all citizens should have the right to worship without the threat of harm. This region continues to suffer from protracted instability driven by communal strife and militant attacks, leading to widespread displacement and death despite various government security efforts.
