The United States government announced that it has stripped more than 175,000 foreign nationals of their visas during President Donald Trump’s administration. Officials stated these actions were taken because the individuals violated visa requirements, engaged in criminal behavior, or were identified as security risks.
The Department of State explained that most revocations stemmed from law enforcement interactions involving various offenses, such as assault, drug-related charges, theft, and driving under the influence. Other significant grounds for cancellation included child abuse, sexual assault, embezzlement, and fraud. The government maintains that its ongoing vetting process is essential to ensure that visitors adhere to visa terms and do not endanger the American public.
Serious criminal cases cited by the department involved charges of kidnapping, human trafficking, felony rape, and domestic violence. Additionally, specific operations led to the cancellation of over 100 visas in North Africa due to birth tourism, where individuals entered the US specifically to secure citizenship for their children. Further instances of misconduct included a $5 million Medicaid fraud scheme and investor deception involving falsified company documents.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also authorized the deportation of several individuals based on foreign policy concerns. This group includes people linked to Cuban and Iranian government influence operations, a sex offender from Laos, and a Kuwaiti national who threatened violence against the US president. The Department of State emphasized that holding a visa is a privilege rather than a right and confirmed its commitment to investigating and removing those who threaten national safety or abuse the immigration system.
