UNN Mass Communication Department to split into five new degrees

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka will break its Mass Communication department into five specialized degree programs starting in the 2026/2027 academic year.

The National Universities Commission has authorized the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to separate its Mass Communication department into five distinct undergraduate degree programs. This change will take effect during the 2026/2027 academic session. Mr. Inya Egwu, acting spokesperson for the university, announced that the new full-time offerings include degrees in Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, and Public Relations.

This transition follows a formal evaluation by an expert panel to determine if the school possesses the necessary infrastructure and personnel. The commission stated that this approval is limited strictly to full-time study. Future attempts to launch part-time or postgraduate versions of these degrees must first receive additional regulatory clearance. The university is also required to maintain the officially approved names for each program.

Prof. Michael Ukonu, the head of the department, extended his appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Anthony Attama, for their assistance during the evaluation process. The university leadership believes this restructuring will help the institution uphold its global academic standards and achieve its strategic development goals.
