United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has solidified its status as a premier financial institution by securing the titles of Nigeria’s Best Bank for Retail and Sustainability Leadership at the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence. The ceremony took place on July 17, 2026, at The Peninsula London, recognizing excellence in financial innovation and sustainable practices.
Euromoney highlighted UBA’s achievements in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts, notably its Green Financing Facility for renewable energy and a ₦5 billion initiative to support women-led businesses. The bank also set a goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, bolstered by the installation of solar power in 50 branches and extensive staff training on sustainability for over 16,000 employees.
In the retail sector, UBA’s customer base expanded to over 37 million by late 2025, with retail revenue climbing to ₦429.5 billion. Digital progress was equally notable, specifically the upgrade to the AI chatbot LEO, which now supports cross-border transfers via the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System.
Group Managing Director Oliver Alawuba noted that these honors reflect the bank’s focus on combining commercial growth with sustainable development. Alero Ladipo, the Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, added that the recognition confirms the institution’s ‘Customer First’ approach to providing impactful financial solutions across Africa.
