UK Resident Doctors Approve Pay Agreement to Conclude Strike Action

Resident doctors in England have ended a year of strikes after voting to accept a government pay offer that provides a 6.6 percent salary increase and 4,500 new training spots.

Resident doctors across England have officially agreed to a government pay and conditions package, marking the conclusion of a year-long period of labor unrest. According to a Monday announcement by the UK government, the deal includes an average salary increase of 6.6 percent, set to be finalized by April 2027. The Department of Health estimates that this adjustment will result in total pay for these medics being over 35 percent higher than levels recorded four years ago.

The agreement also includes the creation of 4,500 additional specialty training positions throughout the next three years. Health Secretary James Murray characterized the result as positive for patients and the National Health Service, noting that it allows the focus to shift toward rebuilding the healthcare system after months of intermittent service interruptions.

Since July of last year, resident doctors participated in 21 days of industrial action, totaling 15 walkouts over three years. While the Labour government, which took office in July 2024, made ending these strikes a priority, negotiations remained strained due to physician demands for inflation-adjusted earnings. A planned walkout scheduled for June 15 was canceled following the submission of the accepted proposal.
