UK government bans Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has designated the IRGC a national security threat, making support for the group punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has officially labeled Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a national security danger. Utilizing newly granted government authority, Mahmood has implemented a ban on supporting the organization, which authorities have connected to instances of intimidation and death threats within the United Kingdom.

In a formal communication to Parliament, the Home Secretary detailed that providing support to the IRGC—ranging from vocalizing positive sentiments to offering practical assistance—is now a criminal act. Those found guilty of these offenses could face up to 14 years behind bars. Furthermore, the government is proscribing two additional organizations: the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR) and the volunteer division of the GRU, which serves as the Russian foreign military intelligence agency.
