A new heatwave is affecting parts of the UK, with projections indicating temperatures could reach the mid-30s Celsius by midweek. The south-east and east of England are expected to see the peak of this heat on Wednesday.
The UK Health Security Agency has responded by issuing amber heat health alerts for much of eastern England, cautioning that the spike in temperature could pose risks to vulnerable populations. Health and social care services may face increased strain, as the region has already experienced an unusually warm July.
While central, southern, and eastern England prepare for high temperatures between 30C and 35C, Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain cooler with periodic showers. This specific period of heat is anticipated to be briefer than the earlier heatwaves recorded this summer.
This weather pattern follows a month of historic dryness. July 2026 is currently ranked as the second-hottest month on record, with rainfall levels hitting near-record lows. Consequently, multiple areas have implemented hosepipe bans, and the arid conditions have elevated the risk of wildfires. Significant precipitation is not currently expected, which remains a concern for soil moisture levels across the country.
