Out of the 20 busiest airports examined, 16 have implemented price hikes for terminal-side access. Gatwick currently leads with a 10-minute drop-off fee of £10, while London City Airport holds the highest per-minute cost at £1.60.
Industry body Airports UK defends these charges as essential tools for managing traffic congestion, lowering local air pollution, and meeting environmental targets. Some advocacy groups, such as the Aviation Environment Federation, suggest these funds should support public transport improvements. However, representatives like Rod Dennis of the RAC argue that such fees exploit captive customers, particularly noting that similar charges are uncommon at major European transport hubs.
Airport operators claim these measures encourage passengers to choose trains or buses. For instance, Gatwick maintains that its charges help reduce unnecessary vehicle trips and encourages travelers to use its extensive rail and bus connections. Meanwhile, businesses have expressed skepticism regarding these justifications, with some industry leaders suggesting that the stated reasons for the fees change too frequently to be credible.
Travelers are advised to verify drop-off costs and payment methods in advance to avoid penalties, as many facilities now utilize camera-enforced systems where late payments result in fines. Exploring shuttle-accessible parking or public transit remains a viable way to avoid these costs.
