Uganda Completes Initial Evacuation of Over 1,100 Citizens from South Africa

Uganda has finalized the first phase of its voluntary evacuation, bringing 1,102 citizens home from South Africa amid ongoing xenophobic tension.

Uganda has successfully finished the primary stage of a voluntary mission to bring home 1,102 of its citizens from South Africa. This effort was launched in response to recent anti-migrant protests and xenophobic unrest.

On Thursday, the final group of 219 people landed at Entebbe International Airport after departing from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. This flight completed a series of six chartered trips coordinated by the two nations.

The Ugandan Embassy in South Africa confirmed the conclusion of this phase on the social media platform X. The operation was managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to guarantee the security of the returning individuals.

This initiative followed orders from President Yoweri Museveni, with assistance from the national carrier, Uganda Airlines. Upon their return, the citizens are scheduled to participate in a training program at the Kyankwanzi National Leadership Institute to prepare for their reintegration into the local community.
