U.S. to Launch Automatic Military Draft Registration in December 2026

The Selective Service System (SSS) has officially moved to implement a new rule that will automatically enroll eligible men for the military draft starting in December 2026.

This administrative shift, submitted for regulatory review on March 30, 2026, follows a mandate from the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress last year.

The change effectively moves the legal burden of registration from the individual citizen to the federal government, which will use existing data sources to populate its database.

Under current federal law, men aged 18 to 25 are already required to register, with failure to do so classified as a felony punishable by heavy fines, imprisonment, and the loss of federal benefits like student loans or government employment.

While most states already facilitate registration through driver’s license applications, national registration rates fell to 81% in 2024. Supporters of the new policy, including Representative Chrissy Houlahan, argue that automating the process will reduce administrative costs and eliminate the need for expensive public awareness campaigns.

Although the United States has not utilized a draft since the Vietnam War, the ongoing military conflict with Iran has intensified public discourse regarding conscription.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated last month that while a draft is not part of the administration’s immediate strategy, President Trump intends to keep all military options available as the international situation evolves.

The SSS expects the new streamlined system to be fully operational by the end of 2026, marking a significant transition in how the U.S. maintains its readiness for potential mobilization.
