Artur Dmitriev, the celebrated Russian pairs figure skater who secured two Olympic gold medals, has died at 58. He remains the only skater in the sport’s history to earn Olympic gold while competing with two distinct partners.
His first championship victory came in 1992 at the Albertville Winter Olympics, where he performed alongside Natalia Mishkutionok for the Unified Team. Six years later, at the 1998 Nagano Games, he captured a second Olympic title representing Russia with his partner, Oksana Kazakova. Additionally, Dmitriev earned three European gold medals throughout his distinguished career, including a win in 1996 with Kazakova.
The Russian figure skating federation released a formal statement expressing sorrow over the loss of the legendary athlete. Born in Ukraine and raised in the Russian city of Norilsk, Dmitriev eventually shifted his focus to coaching in Moscow and St Petersburg. His legacy continues through his son, Artur Dmitriev, who also serves as a skating coach.
