Two suspects detained by Bayelsa Police following deadly student cult conflict

Bayelsa police have arrested two suspects in connection with a lethal cult clash that resulted in the death of a Niger Delta University student in Amassoma.

Authorities from the Amassoma Division of the Bayelsa State Police Command have taken two individuals into custody after a fatal clash involving rival cult groups. The violent encounter occurred in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, resulting in the recovery of a pair of handmade pistols and two 9mm live cartridges.

The victim, 200-level Management Science student Ebube Jonathan from Niger Delta University, was fatally attacked on Kabaka Street on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. DSP Musa Mohammed, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the student suffered both machete wounds and gunshot injuries before being pronounced dead at a medical facility.

Shortly after the attack, law enforcement officers tracked the situation to Ending Pele in Amassoma. There, they apprehended 24-year-old Godswin Adobu, a 300-level student at the same university, alongside 21-year-old Tarilaefa Fesingha. The suspects were allegedly planning a retaliation strike when they were caught.

Commissioner of Police Edebor Iyamah emphasized that the command remains dedicated to eradicating violent cult activities. He cautioned against participating in such crimes and encouraged residents to report suspicious behavior to the police, noting that the investigation remains active.
