Trump Extends Ultimatum as Strikes Hit Residential Areas in Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 10-day extension to his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, moving the cutoff to April 6, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The President stated that the pause on striking Iranian energy and power infrastructure comes at the “request of the Iranian government,” asserting that backchannel negotiations are “going very well.”

However, this narrative has been met with skepticism; international mediators and Iranian state media have denied that Tehran made such a request, with some Iranian officials describing the U.S. claims as “negotiating with itself.”

The conflict, now entering its fourth week, has seen a devastating escalation on the ground despite the talk of a pause:

  • Fatal Strikes in Qom and Tehran: In the early hours of Friday, March 27, U.S.-Israeli airstrikes reportedly hit residential neighborhoods. In the city of Qom, at least six people were killed when three homes in the Pardisan area were destroyed. In Tehran, rescue teams are currently working to pull survivors from the rubble of a residential complex hit overnight.

  • The 15-Point Proposal: U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that a 15-point peace plan was delivered to Tehran via Pakistani intermediaries. The proposal reportedly demands significant concessions regarding Iran’s nuclear program and maritime control. Tehran’s preliminary response reportedly includes counter-demands for war reparations and an immediate end to all U.S.-Israeli strikes.

  • Economic Stranglehold: The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to roil global markets. With 20% of the world’s oil supply blocked, Brent crude prices have surged toward $126 per barrel, fueling record inflation and supply chain disruptions for fertilizers and energy across Asia and Europe.

While President Trump maintains a “conciliatory yet firm” tone on social media, the humanitarian toll in Iran continues to rise, with thousands of casualties reported since the start of Operation Epic Fury on February 28. Regional tensions remain at a breaking point as Iran-backed groups continue to target U.S. assets and allied infrastructure in the Gulf.
