A chieftaincy celebration in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, was abruptly ended by a tragic electrocution incident on Tuesday, November 11, resulting in one death and injuries to three others.
The unfortunate event occurred on Anjorin Street where a community member was hosting a party following his conferment with a chieftaincy title. Several canopies had been erected for the guests.
The tragedy unfolded when a sand-carrying truck attempted to drive down the street but was obstructed by one of the canopies spanning the road.
According to witnesses, several party attendees, along with the truck’s unidentified motor boy, attempted to move the metal-framed structure to clear the path for the vehicle. In the process of shifting the canopy, its metal framework reportedly made contact with an exposed electric cable.
An eyewitness, Femi Ajiboye, stated that the victims were instantly electrocuted upon contact. Another resident, Olajide, confirmed that the four victims were rushed to the hospital, where the motor boy was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other three party guests survived and are currently receiving treatment.
The deceased’s family later collected his remains for burial.
When contacted regarding the fatal incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer on Sunday reported that she had not received any official information, adding that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the area stated that no such case had been filed at the station. Subsequent attempts to reach the PPRO for an update on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
