Traditional Ruler and Family Slain in Benue Community Attack

A violent assault in the Olegabulu area of Benue State’s Agatu Local Government resulted in the deaths of a local traditional leader, his spouse, and their child on Thursday night.

Several other residents were also killed, while one person sustained injuries during the incident, leaving the village in a state of grief.

The deceased were identified as Chief Momo Alexander Awodi, his wife Abigail Awodi, and their son Boniface Ochowechi. Also lost in the violence were Ochowechi Ochegwu and Deborah Ochowechi.

While initial concerns pointed toward herders, a local source suggested the violence might stem from internal communal friction rather than external herdsmen.

Witnesses reported seeing strangers moving through the village square shortly before the shooting, with the individuals communicating in the local Agatu dialect. This detail has puzzled residents, as the area had previously remained peaceful for many years.

The community is situated near the home of the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin Ejeh. Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, Ejeh called for restraint and urged citizens to avoid retaliatory actions.

He confirmed that security forces have been deployed to the area and are actively working to locate the perpetrators and ensure the region remains stable.
