Tottenham Hotspur are nearing the acquisition of Sandro Tonali after finalizing a club-record £100 million deal with Newcastle United. Manager Roberto De Zerbi successfully navigated competition from Arsenal and Manchester City to secure the 26-year-old Italian midfielder.
The financial package includes an upfront payment of £92.5 million supplemented by £7.5 million in performance-based incentives. This transaction follows the recent agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million, highlighting a significant shift in Tottenham’s financial approach since the transition in ownership. The Lewis family has committed to funding a major squad overhaul following the departure of former chairman Daniel Levy.
These acquisitions supplement a busy transfer window for the club, which has already added free agents Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka, alongside Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million. Tonali arrives at Spurs after serving a 10-month international suspension for gambling violations imposed in late 2023. Additionally, the midfielder received a suspended two-month ban in May 2024 for violating English betting regulations.
