Todd Blanche confirmed as US Attorney General following narrow Senate vote

Former Trump personal lawyer Todd Blanche has been confirmed as US attorney general in a 50-49 Senate vote, ending a tense standoff.

Todd Blanche, who has operated as the acting attorney general since April, has secured a narrow confirmation to become the official leader of the US Department of Justice. The 50-49 vote successfully concluded a prolonged dispute between the Trump administration and Senate Republicans.

Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joined the Democratic caucus in voting against the nomination. The tie-breaking vote was provided by Senator Bill Cassidy, whose support was a notable development given his history of friction with President Donald Trump. Cassidy stated he viewed the confirmation as a necessary step to provide the administration with a qualified legal adviser who could offer candid counsel.

Opposition to the nomination centered on Blanche’s previous work, particularly his management of document releases related to Jeffrey Epstein and his efforts to establish an anti-weaponisation fund. Concerns were raised that the fund could potentially benefit individuals prosecuted for their involvement in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Although Blanche pledged to withdraw the fund following criticism, some lawmakers remained skeptical regarding his independence. Senator Murkowski explicitly cited her lack of faith in Blanche’s ability to constrain potential executive overreach, describing the nomination as part of a trend toward the politicisation of the justice department.

Blanche, formerly a personal attorney for Donald Trump, was serving as deputy attorney general when he stepped into the interim leadership position after the departure of Pam Bondi. Despite the controversy surrounding his confirmation, Senator Cassidy argued that confirming Blanche was the most prudent path forward, asserting that it would empower the official to better influence the direction of the department.
