Tinubu Hails Senate For Speedy Confirmation Of New Defence Minister
President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Senate for its rapid confirmation of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, a move he described as both timely and pivotal for a nation grappling with deepening security concerns.
In a post shared on his X handle Thursday, Tinubu disclosed that he forwarded Musa’s name for confirmation only two days earlier. He praised the retired general as “a fine gentleman” whose experience and leadership, he believes, will be essential in steering Nigeria through its current security challenges.
Tinubu wrote:
“Two days ago, I transmitted the name of General Christopher G. Musa, our immediate past Chief of Defence Staff and a fine gentleman, to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation as the Federal Minister of Defence.
I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday. His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a Nation.”
The Senate had confirmed Musa on Wednesday after a five-hour screening session, during which lawmakers pressed him on recent security failures including the controversial withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, shortly before the abduction of schoolgirls on November 17.
Musa assured lawmakers that he would launch a full-scale investigation into the matter once he assumes office. He also vowed to probe the killing of Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba in Borno State and other attacks targeting senior military officers.
His appointment comes after the exit of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, who resigned reportedly for health-related reasons.
Tinubu ended his message with a blessing for the nation, noting the significance of the moment:
“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
