Tim Merlier secured his second consecutive victory at the Tour de France on Saturday, triumphing in the stage eight bunch sprint in Bergerac. The 33-year-old Soudal Quick-Step rider, who also won stage seven on Friday, overcame a poor position in the final 500 meters to surge ahead and cross the finish line first.
Merlier outpaced Biniam Girmay, who finished second, while Olav Kooij took third place. This result marks Merlier’s fifth career stage win at the Tour. Despite a breakaway attempt by Liam Slock earlier in the 180.4km stage, the peloton successfully reeled in the escapee shortly before the finish.
In the overall standings, Tadej Pogacar continues to lead the race, maintaining his yellow jersey ahead of Jonas Vingegaard. Meanwhile, organizers have announced that stage nine will be shortened from 185.5km to 155.5km due to an intense heatwave in the Correze region.
