Tems Makes History as First African Woman to Secure RIAA Diamond-Certified Single

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has made history as the first African female artist to earn an RIAA Diamond certification for her collaboration on the track Wait For U.

Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, widely recognized as Tems, has achieved a historic milestone as the first female African musician to receive a Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This honor was granted for the song Wait For U, a popular track featuring Future and Drake, which has exceeded 10 million units in sales.

Data analytics site Chart Data confirmed the news on social media, noting that the track has officially surpassed 11 million units sold within the United States. With this accomplishment, Tems follows in the footsteps of Wizkid, who remains the only other African performer to earn a Diamond certification, having reached the threshold earlier with his feature on Drake’s One Dance.

This success highlights the rising international profile of Tems and the broader surge in popularity for Nigerian sounds on the global stage. Since her rise to prominence, the singer has secured multiple Grammy wins and collaborated with various prominent international artists. Supporters across social media platforms have lauded the achievement as a defining moment for the African music industry, signaling the ongoing global expansion of Afrobeats.
