Tehran charges Washington with clear breach of peace agreement

Iran has denounced recent US military strikes as a clear violation of their peace agreement, even as both nations prepare to initiate talks on nuclear issues and sanctions relief.

On June 16, 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi addressed foreign diplomats in Tehran regarding a recent agreement between Iran and the United States. While officials indicated that discussions concerning nuclear programs and the lifting of sanctions were expected to commence shortly, Iran simultaneously labeled recent American military actions as a severe infringement of their ceasefire. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that US strikes against coastal surveillance infrastructure represent a direct contradiction of the memorandum of understanding designed to halt the ongoing regional conflict.

The US military acknowledged conducting operations on Friday against Iranian drone facilities, missile storage, and coastal radar installations. According to US representatives, these strikes were a direct retaliation for an Iranian offensive targeting a commercial vessel within the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these tensions, President Donald Trump maintained that the maritime passage would be fully operational following the formal signing of the peace deal, which is projected to trigger a 60-day negotiation period for a final settlement.
