Cristo Fernandez, widely recognized for his portrayal of Dani Rojas in the series Ted Lasso, has successfully transitioned from acting to professional athletics. The 35-year-old Mexican performer achieved a long-standing goal on Sunday by appearing for the El Paso Locomotive, a club competing in the second-tier USL.
Entering the match as a substitute in the 79th minute, Fernandez participated in the final group stage contest of the USL Cup against New Mexico United. Although the team suffered a 2-0 defeat and Fernandez received a yellow card late in the game for a challenge on goalkeeper Kris Shakes, the appearance marked his formal professional entry. He secured a spot with the Texas-based club in May following a successful two-month trial period.
Before his acting career took off, Fernandez played youth soccer in Guadalajara, though a knee injury halted his progress at age 15. After shifting to London, he secured the role of Rojas in the acclaimed Apple TV production. Reflecting on his return to the sport, Fernandez emphasized the importance of self-belief and perseverance in pursuing one’s aspirations regardless of the timeline.
