The Taraba State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has formally notified the Taraba State government, Governor Agbu Kefas, and the university administration that a strike may occur if their long-standing demands remain unmet. The union has established a 14-day deadline to resolve these issues.
Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, the union’s chairman, announced this decision on Thursday, noting that the resolution was finalized during a congress meeting on August 13, 2026. This ultimatum remains active until August 26. The action follows instructions from the ASUU National Executive Council regarding the failure to uphold the 2025 ASUU/FGN agreement.
Mbave clarified that this notice is not an invitation for further discussion but a firm requirement for immediate compliance. The union expressed frustration over the administration’s continued disregard for official communications from both ASUU and the National Universities Commission regarding these contractual obligations.
Although the union has shown patience to maintain stability on campus, they emphasized that their restraint should not be mistaken for abandonment of their rights. ASUU is specifically calling for the full implementation of the 2025 agreement and the payment of all financial arrears accumulated since January 2026. They are urging all stakeholders to pressure the government to settle these obligations before the two-week window closes to avoid a total shutdown of university operations.
