Emergency crews successfully extracted a woman from the remains of a collapsed building following a pair of severe earthquakes in Venezuela, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. Government authorities report that the death toll has reached at least 235, with 4,300 individuals suffering injuries and many more currently listed as missing or pinned beneath debris.
Graciela Mora was recovered in La Guaira, a region hit particularly hard by the seismic events. Although Mora survived the incident with injuries including a fractured finger, the companion she was with did not survive. She shared with the Associated Press that she clutched her friend’s hand during the wait for rescue, wanting to ensure the person did not face death in isolation.
These tremors represent some of the most intense seismic activity recorded in the region over the past hundred years, resulting in extensive infrastructure damage across the affected area.
