Sunday Igboho Explains Federal Government Refusal to Negotiate with Oriire Kidnappers

Sunday Igboho explains why the Nigerian government refused to meet kidnappers’ demands following the rescue of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, stated on Saturday that the Federal Government rejected terrorist demands during the recent Oriire, Oyo State kidnapping crisis to prevent fueling further criminal activities. According to a statement from his office, President Bola Tinubu maintained that paying ransoms or swapping detainees would only empower bandit operations across Nigeria.

The victims, comprising students and staff from three local schools, were held for 56 days after their May 15, 2026 abduction. They were eventually liberated on Friday following a coordinated security operation. Igboho praised the military for utilizing advanced intelligence and diplomatic tactics to secure the captives safely.

He expressed gratitude toward President Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu, the Department of State Services, and Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa for their effective collaboration. Igboho noted that this successful rescue has restored public confidence in the administration’s ability to handle national security threats.

Looking forward, Igboho affirmed that the government remains dedicated to working with local security groups to protect rural communities and farmers in the South West. Despite the success of the rescue mission, he extended his condolences to the family of Michael Oyedokun, a teacher tragically killed by the kidnappers during the ordeal.
