Standards Organisation of Nigeria receives 200kW solar plant from EU and GIZ

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has inaugurated a new 200kW solar power system donated by the European Union and Germany to improve energy efficiency testing and reduce operational costs.

The European Union has provided a 200kW solar photovoltaic power system to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). During the inauguration in Lagos, Massimo De Luca, representing the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, noted that the initiative was a joint effort between the EU and Germany. He highlighted that the project aims to bolster energy innovation within Nigeria and demonstrates the EU’s dedication to the nation’s energy transition.

Dr. Karin Jansen, representing the German Embassy, emphasized that this facility will assist SON in testing energy performance standards while fostering a more resilient business climate. SON Director-General Ifeanyi Okeke praised the development as a significant step in the agency’s cooperation with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, which dates back to a 2018 agreement with GIZ.

The collaboration has grown to cover laboratory infrastructure, staff training, and the regulation of electric mobility. Notably, the partnership enabled the creation of Minimum Energy Performance Standards and mandatory labelling for electrical appliances. Mr. Okeke explained that the facility will function as a primary testing hub for West Africa, noting that the agency expects to save significant funds previously spent on diesel and grid electricity.
