Southern Brave kicked off their Hundred campaign at the Utilita Bowl with a tense eight-run victory over Welsh Fire. Despite a shaky start, the hosts managed to defend a modest total of 127.
Welsh Fire appeared poised to win while reaching 109-3, driven by Georgia Voll’s 52. However, teenage spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman shifted momentum by removing Voll, triggering a collapse where the visitors lost five wickets for just six runs. Captain Sophie Molineux secured figures of 3-14, sealing the win.
Earlier, Southern Brave batted first and posted 127-6. Laura Wolvaardt provided stability with an unbeaten 45, while Heather Graham led the Fire bowling attack with impressive figures of 4-19. Brave’s victory was particularly impressive given their poor fielding, which included several dropped catches.
Welsh Fire, who invested heavily in captain Sophie Devine, will look to recover in their next match. The tournament continues with London Spirit facing Manchester Super Giants at Lord’s.
