Environmental and educational activist Sonam Wangchuk, 59, has been admitted to a hospital after concluding a 20-day hunger strike. He initiated the protest on June 28, seeking the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to accusations of fraud in medical entrance tests.
Wangchuk campaigned at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, supported by hundreds of students demanding honesty in the academic system. Other groups, such as the Cockroach Janta Party, also held demonstrations. According to the Delhi Police, Wangchuk was moved for treatment based on medical recommendations and a mandate from the High Court. While his removal caused a minor disturbance among supporters, officials have requested that the area be cleared peacefully.
The Delhi High Court had previously ordered medical oversight of the activist, citing the potential danger to his health. Throughout the ordeal, Wangchuk insisted his cause was essential for the integrity of Indian education. This unrest stems from a larger scandal involving the cancellation of tests for 2.2 million students after a significant paper leak, which has sparked ongoing national protests.
